archaeological survey

Intensive pedestrian reconnaissance provides important baseline data for many projects. In-field observations represent the foundation for archaeological inference. Lost Canyon Consulting conducts archaeological surveys to locate, document, and evaluate archaeological properties in some of the most remote areas of the western US, relying on extended backcountry travel, rope-based access, or river-based access when necessary.

archival research

Locating and interpreting primary-source documents sheds new light on historic people, places, and events. Meticulous scrutiny of archival documents illuminates unexpected links between written records, oral histories, and historic archaeological remains. Lost Canyon Consulting conducts research that places primary source materials within their broader historical context, providing a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the historic past.

mapping and architectural documentation

The built environment constrains the movement of people, making architectural syntax an ideal window into social organization. Detailed mapping projects using GPS/GIS and total station data provide high-resolution documentation of prehistoric architectural remains and site layout. Lost Canyon Consulting can also partner with specialists to provide terrestrial-based remote sensing (e.g. magnetometer and resistivity) and aerial imaging (e.g. drone and lidar).
